BLUFFTON PARKWAY UPDATE
It seems odd that nearly a year after voters approved the sales tax road project list we're still considering major design changes for extending Bluffton Parkway toward the bridges to Hilton Head Island.
As described for the referendum last November, the extension would include a flyover at the approach to the bridges to help move traffic on and off Hilton Head. But Hilton Head Mayor Tom Peeples and others are asking whether it would be better to end the parkway at Buckingham Plantation Drive, near the Moss Creek intersection on U.S. 278.
Peeples said traffic counts show the number of vehicles crossing the bridge to Hilton Head has held steady for the past six years. That means an extended Bluffton Parkway primarily would be used to move traffic around the greater Bluffton area and not to and from Hilton Head. If that's true, an expensive flyover to move traffic on and off Hilton Head could wait.more>
